What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) gently increases oxygen absorption in your body, allowing tissues, cells, fluids, and the brain to receive the fuel they need to heal and function optimally.

HBOT is a treatment for a number of conditions that involves breathing oxygen in a pressurized chamber. The pressurization provides greater oxygen absorption in the body and hyperoxygenates the blood plasma, blood cells, cerebrospinal fluids, and other body fluids in ways other treatments cannot. As your blood carries the oxygen throughout your body, it helps to boost energy,  fight bacteria and inflammatory responses, stimulates the release of growth factors and stem cells, and more which promote healing.

HBOT has been used successfully in medical settings for treating decompression sickness, serious infections, and wounds that haven’t healed. In addition to “on-label” conditions or FDA recognized conditions, research shows it also helps improve recovery for a wide range of “off-label” conditions, from injuries and Lyme disease to post traumatic stress and head trauma to COVID-19 and progressive loss of physiological capacity from age-related diseases.

Sage Integrative Wellness combines the effectiveness of medical-grade technology with regenerative comfort, integrative care, and holistic nursing hospitality to offer more inclusive rapid recovery for our rural community of Maui in a soothing healing environment right in the heart of the historic town of Makawao.

How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Works

HBOT is a noninvasive treatment that involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber.

With HBOT, your lungs can take in up to 3 times more oxygen than they do when breathing at normal air pressure.

The increased oxygen is picked up via the bloodstream and transported to damaged tissues to facilitate the healing process.

Your brain and body require an adequate supply of oxygen to function optimally. The oxygen you breathe in through your lungs enters the bloodstream, which carries it throughout your body and brain more quickly and directly than it would be possible breathing in at normal air pressure. Whenever there is an injury, you need increased oxygen to help repair the damaged tissues and HBOT can help.

As a result, the increased oxygen rejuvenates and repairs tissue suffering from a lack of oxygen (hypoxia) by restoring adequate blood supply to those body system areas.

What To Expect

Overview: The treatment simply involves lying in a pressurized chamber for a designated period of time and specific number of sessions based on your individual needs. A Registered Nurse, specially trained and certified in hyperbaric oxygen therapy, monitors the process for your comfort and safety.

Before: A necessary first step is to schedule an appointment for a consultation with our certified hyperbaric oxygen nurse experts. During that discussion both you, the hyperbaric nurse,  and the certified medical provider will determine if Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a viable supportive treatment option and identify a personalized protocol to address your individual needs. The number of treatments can vary depending on the need such as it may be 20 to 60 for some and for others, it could be as few as 5-10 or an as needed basis. Final determinations will be made upon evaluation of the unfolding healing process.

During: At the beginning each session, one of our trained hyperbaric nurse experts will check your vitals and review with you what is and is not allowed in the chamber during treatment. During the HBOT session, you will lay comfortably in our hyperbaric chamber, made for individual-only use. Our trained hyperbaric nurse will be present to monitor and speak with you throughout the treatment. The chamber has a  clear window with an ability to communicate at all times. The chamber is equipped with fresh clean linens to allow you to relax, read or journal, or participate in art and color therapy during the treatment. Many choose to nap during this time as well.

As the treatment begins, you may experience ear pressure similar to what one might feel on an airplane or at a high elevation. Yawning or swallowing will usually relieve the pressure.

A typical treatment last from 60 to 120 minutes. Our goal is to make this experience as comfortable as possible for you during that time

After: At the end of the session, the technician will wrap up by taking your vitals again. You may feel energized, tired, or hungry following a treatment. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment does not limit your normal daily activities.

If you are interested in learning more about how HBOT can potentially help you, we recommend you set up a time to talk with one of our certified hyperbaric nurse experts to learn more.

Contrainidications

HBOT has been reported to have beneficial effects for a range of conditions, without negative side effects. Our trained hyperbaric nurses will discuss risks, benefits, side effects, and any contraindications with you during your initial appointment. As with many treatments, there are absolute and relative contraindications, including:

  • Acute asthmatic attack
  • High fever
  • Seizure disorder
  • Optic neuritis
  • Pneumothorax (collapsed lung)
  • COPD or Emphysema
  • Ear infection or blocked ear canals
  • Sinus or upper respiratory infection
  • Aneurysm
  • Glaucoma
  • Pregnancy
  • Severe heart or lung disease

Sage Integrative Wellness does not claim to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. While hyperbaric oxygen therapy may enhance healing, it does not replace a health professional’s prescribed medications or recommended treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What To Expect With HBOT Treatments -FAQs

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a proven treatment that enhances healing by directly sending the body with a significant amount of oxygen. Credible use for over 100 years including aiding in the creation of naval diving charts, it supports brain health, anti-aging, performance recovery, and medical conditions.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) takes place inside an air sealed transparent chamber filled with room air.

The treatment aids the body to absorb oxygen in a greater amount with an increased atmospheric pressure, boosting oxygen transportation to the blood cells, blood plasma, cerebral-spinal fluid, and other body fluids to accelerate recovery and supporting cellular repair. The more oxygen we have the more energy; the more energy we have, the more healing we receive.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is widely recognized for its FDA-approved (on-label) uses like treating chronic wounds, altitude sickness, radiation injury, and carbon monoxide poisoning.

There is already a growing amount of research that supports its validity and efficacy in many (off-label) conditions not yet covered by insurance. Off-label is NOT the same as experimental. It means the science is ahead and policy has not caught up yet.

Yes, HBOT is safe when properly supervised and properly trained. At Sage Integrative Wellness, treatments are protocol-driven, medically overseen, and administered by certified hyperbaric nursing staff.

Controlling the environment: Not bringing any electronic devices, cell phones, toys or other personal electronics or items with a battery inside the hyperbaric chamber. The presence of such items within a confined and increased pressure environment (even without an added oxygen source) poses a fire hazard and can interfere with the safe operation of the equipment.

Implanted medical devices: Implanted medical devices may be allowed within a hyperbaric environment, if they have been approved by the manufacturer for use in increased pressure environments and undergone applicable testing. The manufacturer of the medical device will know if the device meets these requirements based on name, model and device serial number.

The number of sessions depends on the reason and condition being supported.

Some patients may benefit from a few sessions, while others may require a more extended treatment plan.

A typical protocol will involve 10-40 daily sessions to build up oxygen in the cells. Our medical team will recommend a specific treatment plan to address your goals and needs.

Most treatment sessions are approximately 60 minutes but some may require up to 90-120 minutes.

In addition to the actual treatment time, there is time required for the pressurization and depressurization of the chamber, which may add 20 minutes to the overall appointment. The exact duration depends on your specific treatment plan.

We generally plan for about 60-90 minutes for your visit.

What to wear: wear clothing such as cotton. Some clothing and fabrics may produce more static electricity than others (such as wool, velcro, and synthetic materials) and increase the risk of fire. Socks are optional.

What to bring (all optional): a book/magazine, blanket (if you tend to get cold), earplugs, eye mask, own linen.

Most patients find HBOT sessions relaxing. You’ll rest comfortably in a 7½-foot-long urethane-coated polyester shell chamber, breathing ambient oxygen. The oxygen has no smell or taste. The chamber is manufactured with nontoxic, medical grade components.

During pressurization and depressurization, you may feel pressure changes, similar to airplane travel. A trained technician will monitor you throughout the session. You’ll lie down fully clothed inside the chamber, and afterward, you can resume normal activities, stay hydrated, and rest.

Before your scheduled treatment, please try to avoid alcohol, caffeine, and carbonated drinks.

It’s best to avoid smoking and any other tobacco products during your treatment period, as they may interfere with the body’s ability to transport oxygen. Cannabis has biphasic effects and may support and/or interfere with treatment.

This can directly affect the time it takes you to heal. We recommend not smoking 2 hours before or after a session.

Otherwise, there are no restrictions for food or activity before or after your treatment. We encourage you to have healthy meals before and after and to stay hydrated.

Controlling the environment: No bringing any electronic devices, cell phones, toys or other personal electronics or items with a battery into the hyperbaric chamber.

There are absolute and relative contraindications, including:

  • Acute asthmatic attack
  • High fever
  • Seizure disorder
  • Optic neuritis
  • Pneumothorax (collapsed lung)
  • COPD or Emphysema
  • Ear infection or blocked ear canals
  • Sinus or upper respiratory infection
  • Aneurysm
  • Glaucoma
  • Pregnancy
  • Severe heart or lung disease
  • Congenital spherocystosis
  • Clients currently taking specific chemotherapy medications

Yes, children can receive HBOT if approved by our medical team.

Studies have demonstrated hyperbaric therapy as an emerging treatment that parents and physicians are utilizing to help ameliorate the effects of autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, injuries, and more.

In general these are non-invasive treatments  as simple as a one-hour daily session, where the parent and child enter a hyperbaric chamber and receive increased levels of oxygen to ensure their child’s comfort during the treatment.

Sage Integrative Wellness ensures that each patient’s treatment plan is overseen by our  dedicated medical team to meet their specific health goals.

Our medical team will review the patient’s medical history, provide clearance, and offer supportive treatment recommendations tailored to the patient’s needs.

If the patient has been referred by another medical provider or practitioner, our team will collaborate with the referring medical provider or practitioner, to design an optimal treatment protocol.

Results vary by individuals and conditions.

Some patients report a positive difference upon completion of a session, feeling better after just a few sessions, while others may see more gradual improvements over a period of time.

Our hyperbaric nurses will guide and support you through what to expect.

Depending on your treatment plan, you may undergo HBOT on a daily or weekly basis. Our medical team will provide you with a recommended frequency, based on your indication and goals.

You can schedule appointments by calling or emailing the clinic directly, requesting an appointment and completing the questionnaire on our scheduling page, or in-person with one of our hyperbaric nurses.

We ask that you provide at least 24-48 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. Failure to do so may result in a cancellation fee.

At Sage Integrative Wellness, we use a soft-shell pressurized chamber without added oxygen for superior therapeutic benefits.

Hard-shell chambers run at higher pressures with additional oxygen to support more severe conditions.

In general, adults seeking ways how to optimize their health and wellness,
seniors and elders with chronic acute and chronic conditions, adults recovering from stress, fatigue, or virus, and people
experiencing long term symptoms from COVID may be eligible for HBOT.

Our team will assess your medical history and specific circumstances through an intake process and initial evaluation with our certified staff to determine your eligibility for HBOT.

No referral is needed. Our medical team will review your intake forms and prescribe HBOT if appropriate.

If you have a prescription from a provider, we’ll coordinate with them. For serious health conditions, we may recommend getting clearance from your physician.

HBOT is generally not covered by insurance, though most FSA/HSA plans allow reimbursement. You’ll want to double check with your insurance provider to be sure.

This is an out-of-pocket non-invasive treatment and we offer a variety of pricing options including a sliding scale which are all designed to suit the different medical and financial needs and preferences of our patients.

We believe this regenerative treatment should be accessible for all people not just for those who can afford expensive spa and wellness related treatments for health and wellbeing.

For flexibility, patients can opt for the pay-as-you-go plan at a per session rate. We also have several package options that offer sessions at a reduced rate when purchased upfront.

Please contact us to discuss pricing and options. We accept cash, credit, and donation.

No, it is not advised to undergo hyperbaric oxygen therapy while you are pregnant. Please consult with your primary care provider or alternative practitioner for additional alternative treatment options during this time.

We respectfully advise you to wait until you recover from your cold or sinus congestion, as changes in pressure can exacerbate these conditions. Waiting also reduces the spread of infections and germs. As soon as you are feeling better we get you back on the calendar and welcome you back with aloha!

If you experience any discomfort during your session, notify the hyperbaric nurse immediately. Our trained hyperbaric nurse is always present to monitor your treatment and will take prompt critical action to address the issue and ensure your comfort and safety.

It is possible to have too much of a good thing, in the case being oxygen. In the context of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, this is referred to as “oxygen toxicity”, which can affect both the central nervous system and the lungs. The likelihood of experiencing oxygen toxicity has to do with two critical factors: pressure and exposure time.

At Sage Integrative Wellness, we have an extensive track record in traditional nursing experience working in the setting of trauma and critical care as well as board certifications in holistic nursing and certification in hyperbaric medicine.

We meticulously assess these variables to ensure safety. The risk of oxygen toxicity is extremely low when the pressure is kept below 2.0 ATA, and the time is kept to 60-minutes.

Our certified trained nurses are already adept at managing these conditions to keep the risk of oxygen toxicity exceedingly low.
